I would not swap from my 2D counters either. I just shudder at the work involved with anything Bolt Action.

To be fair though, it is not just Bolt Action. It is any of these mini based games now seem like they would be too much work. Flames of War, Command Decision, and now this Battle Ground WWII all have the "paint and base" need for their miniature armies.

Its pretty crazy, I like the ideas but I could never make it happen or justify the expense. I would be playing even less.

If you want to enjoy seeing some great tables and well painted armies while not having to shell out for your own collection, visit Historicon some year. It is the largest Miniature Wargame conventions in the US. Some really nice tables as some of those are supported by whole clubs of people. Google Historicon and look though the images. Lots of different eras and settings, some fun stuff to look at.

For many folks that play full miniatures games, painting/modeling/basing is a key part of the hobby. It works for them and more power to them. Seeing a fully decked out table and figures is amazing to look at.

But as pointed out, assuming a fixed amount of spare time that impacts your ability to play (at least initially).

I would rather spend the time playing 😀

That is true. I knew one man who loved to buy, paint and base DBA armies. He loved to read up on the army then buy the minis, paint them, base them, and then add them to his display. But by his own telling, he played DBA only a couple of times. He just really had a blast doing the painting.

That´s exactly the reason why I changed to "Heroes of Normandie"… I´m a real fan of WW2 and History in general, but after 3 years focused on Flames of war and Bolt Action, I suddenly realized that in fact I was dedicating much more time to painting/modelling/basing and even planning and getting used to complex rules, that on playing!

So at any given point I was spending a 90% of my hobby time to painting and only a 10% to playing… in addition, it normally took us at leats 30 minutes to prepare the battlefield (for which, by the other hand, we need a big table and scenery…) and around other 20 to dismount everything…

And then I discovered HoN, with its simple and easy to learn but effective rules, its variety of equipment and cards (which from my point of view help to represent a random event) and a totally new system which I could "deploy" directly on my living room table and in a matter of a few minutes… and with missions that can be played in 45 minutes!

So, in summary, for those ones like me who don´t have time to waste on painting and preparing and who SIMPLY want to play and focus on strategy and new tactics, HoN is the best solution I´ve ever seen… so thanks to the DPG guys for this really good system…

That´s all 😛

Wow you guys were fast. I admire your efforts. When I was into Flames of War it often took us an hour just to unpack and set up the game. Then to clean up and repack out stuff often took almost as long.

I have some exciting news I got a few figures painted and this guy did a figure that was similar to Smokey from the Commonwealth Army Box. I have an awesome picture but can't seem to upload it any ideas how to get this on the forum.

Actually it all came around as we both enjoyed HoN so I sent over a few pictures of the boxes and heroes and he designed a figure based off smokey. But getting a few more figures in metal commissioned to display. But seriously I think HoN is so quick to set up and play and learn and you can play small or massive games. There are so many options.

Upload the photo to a storage site like Photobucket. Then you can get a "Direct Link" that you can use on a site like this.

Yep, you´re right! In fact most of the times we also needed around 1,5 hours for the whole thing… that´s why I was saying "at least…" 😀 😀

The funny thing is that we also used to discuss about the layout of the battlefield to make it as much realistic as possible… so you can imagine that, in the end, we just managed to have a nice "diorama" instead of an interesting match 😮

I uses to love modeling the armies when I was still playing 40K and FOW and other minis games. Now, though, my eyesight and finger dexterity has gone down, I don't enjoy modeling so much anymore. So I much prefer HoN counters to figures now.

This is supposed to be a joyful occasion. Lets not bicker and argue about who killed who.

Bolt Action Book Posted on [08/02/2016] à 18:18

What I've decided to do is buy a few figures already painted under the guise of using them in HoN the first figures were amazing. But wow I could never put that effort into modelling.

That is what they all say. LOL

All jokes aside, it is nice to get a couple of items that are painted for fun. Enjoy them.

Aha your right. It's so nice. I got metal figures for durability but they were fantastic but seriously I could not sit and paint that would be my worst nightmare. But nice to appreciate talent.

And course I must post the picture of Smokey.

Yes, you must.

I know a person here in my area who has made some money painting troops for other people. Seems there are some who would rather pay someone than do their own. LOL
