Running an HoN Tournament
Running an HoN Tournament Posted on [07/03/2023] à 07:32

I'm unclear on how HoN is played in a tournament setting.

Can one of the organizers from a previous event enlighten me on how that would work?

Typically, 250 points per army.

A maximum of 4 Order Tokens, if I remember correctly.

And a map specifically built for the event.

There was a list of blacklisted Recruitment Tiles and their units (mostly Heroic Platoons) because some were too powerful.

I have to look up any other details.

Here are some downloads from previous tournaments, which might give you an idea how maps and rules are set up. Note that deck preparation is something of the past as we have the new 50-card decks now.

There's an online tournament going on at the moment, via TableTop Simulator. See the forum thread or the Discord channel for more info on that.

Exactly, and I organize it.

A few years ago, the « chauds six » organized the DPG tournament in Paris.

On our website, there is some information (see the link below).

If you can read the French, I will send you what I have by email, plus more details.

My email is guitho1974@outloook.fr.

@Guitho – sadly, I do not speak French, and I do not have the option of using Tabletop Simulator at this time (work computer).

Thank-you both for the information on the format and the examples of scenarios used.

In the San Francisco/Oakland bay area, there are a number of local conventions that feature wargames, and I would love to run a HoN event once I'm much more familiar withe the rules.

There was also a couple of interesting campaign systems set up to be played by the community. If you grow the tournament scene a bit, you might want to look at those as well, since it allowed several games to count for one battle, and then affect later battles in the series to represent an entire front. You can find the notes in the Events forum.

Great work full of wonderful ideas.

Hello schoon, here are some information and precision about HoN tournament (for a one-day tournament).

Scenarios

    – 2 scenarios, with objectives to control (main and secondary objectives is a good solution to count points)

    – Each player will play each scenario twice with the two sides (allies and axes)

    – a game is 1 hour long at its maximum

    – generally, the scenarios last 6 turns

Armies composition

    – 250 pts

    – 4 numbered orders maximum (if a composition implies more than 2 orders, the numerous ones can be use to support the lost of one order during the game)

    – each player prepare an army for each side. Those armies will be use to play the 2 scenarios (which means that those armies must be mixed to fit with the 2 scenarios)

    – the armies must be validated by a referee

Generally, some units are forbidden :

    – Level up

    – print and play

    – KS exclusive

    – Kelly's heroes

Points

    – the winner of a game is the one who has the maximum number of points

    – in case it is a draw, the point of loss are counted

Rules

    – generally the compendium is used

    – it is good to have a referee who will take decision about the rules when players have different opinions (to avoid a lost of time during a game, 1 hour might be very short…)

At the end the link toward the OPJH2019 tournament organized by the chauds-six (in french but google translate may be a very good friend…)

Does game time include initial deployment?

For the benefit of @schoon that would include 1st edition exclusives: Miller's Rangers, Whittman, Col. Bastien (which is a shame, I would love to see the FFI in a tournament).

It also includes the Promos Siegfried, Furlong, Karl von Croc, and Private Bryan, if I am not mistaken.

What about Gazette Heroic units?

Is Pointe du Hoc considered an exclusive?

Regarding the Compendium, what about Offset Grid rules? Those are in BRO, but not in the Compendium.

The other new material (Multi-part buildings, Elevations, and some of the rules related to Lines) can be handled through map design for the scenarios.

As a veteran, I was talking about ancient tournaments…

Of course you can do the same with the BRO edition. Therefore, the forbidden units will be reduced…

Does anyone know why these units are forbidden?

Is it because they are difficult to obtain? Or perhaps they are "overpowered"?

I plan to organize some competitive games between myself and a friend using only my collection. I own some of these units. If these units are not overpowered then I think we'll go ahead and use them.

Running an HoN Tournament Posted on [13/03/2023] à 17:48

I would imagine that it's more due to the availability of the expansions as opposed to them being inappropriately costed. That would explain why KS exclusives and PnP items are on there.

You don't want to create a have/have not situation for tournaments. Skill should determine the winner, not the "extra" stuff they might or might not have.
