Heroes First World War Game
'Heroes' WW1 Board Game Posted on [10/06/2022] à 21:01

Hello everyone,

I absolutely love the whole 'Heroes' system of games and I was curious what the future may hold for this incredible board game series.

I would personally love to see a 'Heroes' game set during The First World War featuring major battles like The Battle of The Somme to small trench raids taking place in the dead of night.

I honestly think a 'Heroes' game that is set during The First World War would bring a whole new feel to this already popular game and I wanted to share with you all a piece of artwork from Ruben Megido who helped create some of the artwork for second edition of 'Heroes of Normandie' which you can view at the following link – https://www.artstation.com/artwork/3qe3lg.

I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions in regards to this piece of artwork.

Thank you again for all your support.

Best Wishes,

Micah Dominic Parsons

I love the ilustration, and also your idea. A first war expansion should be terrific. Anyway, the awesome spanish civil war pictures also make me think about an heroes expansion for that confluct too.

Thanks for share.

Hello Guillermorx,

I think there would be so many options for a First World War 'Heroes' board game! I mean you could have everything from the small scale trench raids to the big set piece battles that took place and perhaps have an expansion that explored the fighting in the mining systems.

I really hope that this idea may be explored in the future.

Hello everyone,

I have a real interest in The First World War and I was rather curious to ask your opinions in regards to adapting the heroes system to a First World War setting and if you think it would work?

I look forward to reading your responses.

I would love to see a Heroes System game based on WW1.

It would be different as warfare was tactically different compared to WW2, but I’m sure that Devil Pig Games could come up with something neat.

Hello Bartdevuyst,

I can totally see the trench raiding aspects of The First World War making a really interesting aspect of a heroes system game to be honest with you!

I was wondering if there was anyone that I could submit my idea to?

As much as I'd love to see a Heroes of the Great War I'm not sure the existing system would work for it. Ww2/40k is much more immediate with all the varieties of tanks, specialist units, vastly different theatres and possibilities of sporadic small actions. Plus all the films, series, etc for artistic source material.

When other games have branched into ww1 they tend to zoom out to give the infantry combat a sense of weight and effort.

All that said, I wonder if a tight narrative campaign game might work. Perhaps command a company of French/German infantry and survive x amount of missions. Throw in an experience system, permanent hero death and weaker replacements. Also drip feed better equipment between missions or an unlockable/upgradable card deck. Horses or bicycles at the start and a single FT17 or armoured car for the last mission.

I reckon the card game might be better suited for a more sandbox game as the implied company scale would allow for the grander offensives of the war. Then you could have tanks (with bog checks), cavalry charges and setup artillery batteries at the rear. Might feel like a very different game though.

This generally sums up my opinion as well.

Your point about a campaign are very interesting, I like it!

Hello everyone,

I have to admit that I totally think that a Heroes style of game would work in a First World War setting.

For example you have the open settings prior to trench warfare with The Battle For Mons which could see a small infantry platoon holding Nimy Bridge against a superior German force or even the small unit trench raids of 1916 and 1917. The game could equally explore the year of 1918 when trench warfare ended and open warfare recommenced.

It would be great to try and explain my idea in further detail in the near future!

PSC's The Great War and Hexasim's Great War Commander pretty much have tactical ww1 games covered. Both are excellent. The former makes the western front stalemates fun. The latter is in the process of getting an Eastern front version and offers pretty much everything you could want in a ww1 small units tactics game.

Red Poppies campaigns offers bigger battles at a regimental scale such as Ypres. If you want "fun-ww1" maybe Trenchclub or the brand new Hogs Of War – both ww1 aesthetics but with more emphasis on entertainment rather than historical accuracy.

I still think the card game format offers a better chance of a solid ww1 theme.

I love the Heroes System and small ww1 tactical games – I'm keen to hear your ideas but the last 10 years has seen some fantastic First World War games. Even Axis and Allies 1914 is good!

Hello everyone,

I know that in the past most people have associated The First World War with mainly being trench warfare however there were periods during The First World War especially in 1914 and in late 1918 that open warfare was actually taking place.

I honestly feel as though the Heroes system would work for a game set in The First World War. There are numerous accounts of small unit actions for example in August 1914 a company of men from The 4th Battalion, The Royal Fusiliers defended a bridge against a superior German force and euqally the attack and defence of Polygon Wood that was conducted by The 1st Battalion, The Kings Liverpool Regiment in October and November 1914.

The capture the essence of the Heroes system you could have units involved in small trench raids or even tasked with missions following the scenario structure of the current Heroes games.

In regards to specialist units, the infantry platoon was split into four sections in 1917, which consisted of a lewis gun section, a rifle grenadier section, a rifle or bayonet section and a bombing section and this is before you add specialists such as engineers, medical units and units that were put together for trench raids. You could even see German stormtroopers or British tanks featured as a unit within the game.

I have to admit that the real stories from The First World War come from the men who served in the infantry sections and I feel there is quite a lot still to be discovered from The First World War.

Over the past year, two video games have been announced which are entitled 'War Hospital' and 'The Great War: Western Front' and I feel this is a genre that is just starting to break the surface in regards to gaming in general especially with the popularity of the video game 'Battlefield One' and the film '1917'.

I really cannot wait to read all your opinions over the coming weeks ahead!

Best thing to do is create some units, rules and give it a go. I'd argue that early 1914, whilst different wouldnt offer much at the Heroes scale beyond some lower counter values and adding in some cavalry and alternative light vehicles. Missing out the stalemates of 15-late 17 you're left with the trench raiding tactics which are very close to ww2 small unit tactics of fire and manoeuvre that at that point your just playing Heroes of Normandie with a new paint job.

Maybe branching into other theatres may do it justice. A Gallipoli or Palestine/Jerusalem theatre incorporating the Ottomans, Arab league and a smattering of desert Germans and Anzacs may help it to feel different. Alternatively Italians vs Austro Hungarians at Caporetto in 1917 as that was Atypical (and included a bloke named Erwin). Perhaps the Russian Revolution with White vs Red could work.

Prior to the centenary ww1 games were all pretty dry and samey. Thanks to the increased media coverage and a certain level of nostalgia and dare I say, jingoism, the quality and volume of WW1 products blossomed. Since the end of 2020 I've not seen anything particularly inspired come out, personally I think the interest/momentum has gone.

I do love Battlefield One!!

Lovely ideas, keep them coming.

Personally, I think there are a ton of stories to tell. Inspiration can come from movies, but in French and Belgian tradition there are a ton of comics to take inspiration from. Think about Tardi’s work about WW1. We’d probably see less vehicles than WW2 though.

fewer vehicles but cavalry charchers! gas attacks. sappers that undermine trenches. all sounds good and a diversity of countries and troops.

Hello everyone,

I have to admit that I would love to see a game set during The First World War! I sometimes think that when The First World War is mentioned that people only think about trench warfare. In late 1918, there was a war of movement which I think would really fit in with the heroes theme!

I have to admit, that I would love to see The 1st Battalion, The Kings Liverpool Regiment featured and The 1/6th Battalion, The Royal Warwickshire Regiment featured in a First World War game especially as I have researched the specific nature of their uniform ensignia and equipment!

You could have a variety of scenarios which could include rescuing the pilot from no man's land or holding a section of trench against a trench raid!

I literally cannot wait to see what other ideas that we can come up with!
