September 1944, the allied “blitzkrieg” following the breakthrough of Cobra began to run out of steam. Despite the unexpected capture of the port of Antwerp intact (the banks of the Scheldt are still in German hands) most of the Allied supplies came from Cherbourg. There is not enough supply to supply both Patton and Montgomery’s troops. The latter then proposed to Eisenhower a bold plan that he believed would allow the war to end at Christmas: Operation Market-Garden.
Three airborne divisions (101st US, 82nd US and 1st UK) are to jump over the Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Arnhem regions to capture key bridges. Starting from the banks of the Scheldt, the XXX Fortified Corps of the Guard Armored Division, 43rd Welsh Infantry Division and 8th Armoured Brigade had to relieve the paratroopers and once Arnhem reached Germany to encircle the Rhür from the north.
The 82nd US Airborne division commanded by General James M. Gavin (“Slim Jim” for his men) is in charge of the Nijmegen (Nijmegen) sector. Its mission is to control the key bridges of Graves and Nimègues as well as the bridges on the Maas/Waal canal while maintaining a defensive front facing the German border. The American paratroopers will have to hold out until the British tanks arrive.
“Nijmegen 44” will allow you to relive through 36 scenarios the battles that took place between 17 and 21 September 1944 in the Nijmegen area during Market Garden. The campaign consists of 8 chapters, each dealing with a sub-sector and a collection of special rules, battle orders and historical maps. It should be noted that you can play without the dike rules if you wish. A chapter will be shared every Tuesday on September 17, 2019, due to the 75th anniversary.
Chapter 1: Capturing the Grave Bridge
The Grave bridge was in 1944 the longest road bridge in Europe (400m) and the first of the 3 strategic bridges that the XXX Corps was to cross on the Arnhem road. Its intact catch was vital. If it were to be destroyed
the 82nd and 1st airborne would be condemned. As a result, General Gavin planned a “helping hand” drop as close as possible to the two approaches to the bridge.
Scenario 1 : Coup de main
Scenario 2: The Assault of Fox Company
Scenario 3: Securing the town of Grave
Chapitre 3 : Molenhoek
The landings have succeeded. The Germans are trying to send their forces to the Allied bridgehead to mount a counterattack in their effort to push the enemy back into the sea. We have been asked to do whatever we can to delay the German convoys. Our main goal is to render the opponent’s vehicles useless… any enemies made “unfit for duty” in this process are of course a welcome bonus…
La Pinetiere, 4 km East of Roncey, France, July 29, 1944 :
The Germans are on the brink of breaking through the American defenses. The battle seems all but won. Just as the Germans think it’s over and done with, reinforcements from the 41st Armored Infantry Regiment hit them in the flank.
La Pinetiere, 4 km East of Roncey, France, July 29, 1944 :
After they pushed back a company of the 4th US Infantry Division, a Kampfgruppe of “Das Reich”, with the aid of about fifteen armored vehicles, has made it to the lines of the US 2nd Armored Division. Supported by two M16, four M10 and two sections of M7, the GI’s brace themselves to block the German advance.
La Pinetiere, 4 km East of Roncey, France, July 29, 1944 :
Operation Cobra, launched on July 25, is a total success. What remains of the 91st and 243rd infantry divisions, some elements of Meindl’s parachute corps along with a large part of both the 2nd and 17th SS Panzerdivisions are trapped in a pocket near Roncey. Their only hope is to break through the American lines in order to rejoin their own forces further South. Several attempts made in the night of 28th – 29th have failed. Early in the morning of the 29th, a fierce attack is made at the La Pinetière crossroads.
St Laurent, France, June 7, 1944 :
On D-Day +1, the bridgehead in the sector of the 29th Division hasn’t been fully secured, in spite of the arrival of the 175th Infantry Regiment. Prior to the advance on Isigny, the 115th and 116th regiments are ordered to clean up any pockets of resistance that still subsist in the area. In the morning, General Norman Cota pays the 115th a visit, checking their efforts to accomplish this mission.

Pointe du Hoc is a promontory with a 100 ft (30 m) cliff overlooking the English Channel on the coast of Normandy in northern France. During World War II it was the highest point between Utah Beach to the west and Omaha Beach to the east. The German army fortified the area with concrete casemates and gun pits. On D-Day (6 June 1944) the United States Army Ranger Assault Group assaulted and captured Pointe du Hoc after scaling the cliffs.
Pointe du Hoc lies 4 mi (6.4 km) west of the center of Omaha Beach. As part of the Atlantic Wall fortifications, the prominent cliff top location was fortified by the Germans. The battery was initially built in 1943 to house six captured French First World War vintage GPF 155mm K418(f) guns positioned in open concrete gun pits. The battery was occupied by the 2nd Battery of Army Coastal Artillery Regiment 1260 (2/HKAA.1260). To defend the promontory from attack, elements of the 352nd Infantry Division were stationed at the battery.
