Schonberg 19/12/44 10h00: As the day was dawning the 3/423rd was leading the regiment. The 590th FAB was standing ready to support them despite the stockpile of ammo being low. There was no contact with the 422nd on their right. The 3/423rd was responsible for the main attack on Schonberg while the 1st and 2nd Bn were tasked with Hill 504. At 9:00 am, while Cavender held a briefing with his battalion commanders, the Germans fired an artillery barrage at the positions of the 423rd. The barrage created chaos in the US ranks. LtCol. Craig from 1st Bn was killed. Then shots and cries were heard in the rear area. The Germans were attacking the positions of 590th FAB! For the 3/423rd LtCol. Klinck, there was only one option — full attack without retreat. The order was given to destroy the last vehicles of the battalion.
