To help US troops recover German looted art during the Second World War, the Allied Military Command created the “Monuments Men” in June 1943. They provided information on cultural heritage and intervention areas. They also protect art works in liberated areas, and are also responsible for searching for missing art works and for creating inventories to return to their owners. This group was made up of about 350 men from 13 different nations. Most of the people in this group were museum directors or curators, art historians, architects, artists, military or academics.
