Miller knelt behind the hedgerow. The distant rumble of artillery and small arms fire a constant reminder that all around him men were pushing forward. Off the beaches. It had been the same sounds in Africa and Italy. Same shit different place.
The M4 continued to burn in the field to his left, the stink of burning fuel and flesh filling the air. A small shed sat ahead, next to the road. And what was left of C Company, 2nd Rangers, only a platoon now, took cover in the hedgerow. Dog Green had sure taken its toll.
“These jobs just keep getting better,” mumbled Horvath rubbing his forehead under his helmet, “and the cavalry’s late.” He grinned but there wasn’t much humour in it.
“I was kind of hoping Ridley and his support would have been here by now too,” said Miller checking his watch. “Maybe their expert scout Kowalski, got lost?”
Horvath shook his head. “Doubt it. They reckon he can creep up on you like a snake.”
It was Millers turn to shake his head. He turned to Horvath, “Get the men ready, we move without them. They’ll have to catch us up. And don’t forget the shed.”
Horvath nodded. The survivors of the M4 crew had hidden their ground to air radio in the shed. And right about now some help from the flyboys in the P47s would be real comforting.
As he turned to go, Horvath stopped and smiled at Miller. “You know, if they ever made a movie about us, they’d probably leave this bit out.”
Miller smiled back, “Yep, they probably would Sarge.” He checked his watch again and pointed forwards. “Rangers Lead the Way!”
